....that they're in the wrong business
I've had people ask me to help with their SEO and I always explain to them that I need to understand their business first, what they are selling and what they want to achieve.
Many times I listen to what they want and think to myself "man, you need to change your business plan !" as they will not succeed in the areas they're trying to target.
Businesses not versed in SEO usually put the cart before the horse in that they have a business idea, create the website and only then start thinking about SEO. In some cases it might be too late at this point to be able to help them effectively if they're trying to sell an ultra competitive product.
On the other hand, I prefer to only build a website based on keyword research and then build a site around that.
