Mini as first car?good idea?ca

I'm hoping to own an austin mini as my first car, as they are tax exempt, cheap tp run, and cheap to insure. However, my budget only stretches to £1000, and I don't want to be doing major work on it. Is it possible to get one that requires work, but not a lot of very expensive work, for this price?I don't mind investing my spare cash into it when i have it, but i also need it to be roadworthy. Can anyone out there help me?
