We just got a brand new oil furnace last summer (July '10) & it worked okay all winter until the beginning of Jan when it stopped working & we assumed we were too low on fuel, the gauge said 1/4 tank though. So we have it refilled & let it sit for 12hrs before we turned it back on to let the fuel settle. The other day (Thur?) it was really warm so we shut the thermostat off & when we turned it back on that night it didn't work. Turned it off & tried again a few hours later & it worked.
Sat afternoon it stopped working again & wouldn't come back on so I called the 24hr service & he told me to push the restart button on the furnace, didn't work. Since 24hr service isn't covered on our warranty I waited until Mon to call them & got told that if it was the jet or the filter it wasn't covered. So my husband decided to check the jet, he got a flashlight & took the front cover (the white cover that goes over the entire heater) off & looked at it.
The seal where the motor/pump goes into the firebox is COVERED in heating oil on the outside. It's like dripping wet. So my husband decides not to touch it at all & I call them back. At first the guy told me that it was for sure a parts problem & was covered, they were supposed to be out this morning. Well, it snowed last night. So I JUST got a call from them (12:30pm) saying that noone would be out today & that it sounded like the jet was clogged & running oil out of the seal & that it would cost a min. $130 to fix it. WHAT? They just told me it was covered. And a "seal" shouldn't let oil out because it shouldn't be letting anything in & out - namely air.
Oh, I forgot to add that even if it IS a jet/filter problem, if we fix it ourselves it voids the shitty warranty we do have.
So am I wrong to refuse to pay because it IS really a jet problem?
Or are they ripping me off because I live 1 1/2hrs away & they don't want to come out & fix it for free even though it's covered?
