How do I recover a lost micros

I was working on 2 different documents (a research paper and a study guide for midterms) on microsoft works word when suddenly, my laptop decides to randomly update itself. The update automatically required it to restart so by the time I had everything set up again, word only recovered 1 document (study guide) and the research paper is gone!
