For people who like buying handmade items?

What exactly are you looking for when buying handmade items besides the obvious uniqueness? For example, do you prefer to buy directly from an artist who has a personal "facebook" page, blog, or searchable youtube with pictures of who the artist is and a back story and all that jazz, or would you prefer to buy from someone who is a seller of the handmade items? I was having a talk with one seller who thinks its best for them to sell in a more "professional" way. As if selling from a well known, established company..-not linking to the artist, or providing info about the artist at all. Just the handmade items. To all customers out there, how do you prefer to buy handmade items?
